Hushed & Brooding · Gothic Botanical Grisaille

A child's face looks out from a broken wall, crowned with flowers and trailed by heavy blackberry vines.

There is a hushed, brooding calm in this artwork. A child's face peers out from a ragged opening in an old wall, wide-eyed and serious, with soft curls swept back and pale blossoms tucked above one ear. The mood is quiet and a little mournful, like a forgotten corner of an old library or a shuttered garden.

The palette is almost entirely gray, from bright chalk white to deep charcoal. Only the blackberries stand out. They hang in glossy clusters along a trailing vine, their dark round beads catching small points of light. The wall around the face looks cracked, flaking and streaked, with chips along the face and shoulder that make the figure look worn by time.

This dark academia piece suits a study, a reading nook, a hallway or a bedroom with deep, moody colors. It pairs well with dark wood, brass lamps, stacks of books and charcoal or forest green walls. If you love gothic botanical art, black and white wall art, or vintage cherub decor with some shadow in it, this one rewards a long look.

Frequently Asked Questions

Canvas, framed art print or art print — what's the difference?

Canvas is printed on textured cotton-polyester canvas and stretched over slim 0.79" (2 cm) wood bars — finished at the edges and ready to hang, with or without a floating frame. A framed art print is printed on premium matte paper and arrives in a pine wood frame behind shatterproof plexiglass, ready to hang. An art print is the unframed paper print, for when you'd like to choose your own frame. You'll find the exact details for your selection under Product Specifications.

How do I choose the right size?

Measure the wall space you want to fill. Above a sofa or bed, a piece about two-thirds of the furniture's width usually looks balanced. For smaller walls, nooks or gallery walls, smaller sizes work well. Our Size Guide shows every size in a room setting for comparison.

Does it arrive ready to hang?

Yes. Canvas and framed art prints arrive ready to hang with the hanging hardware included; framed canvas and framed art prints come with a pre-installed sawtooth hanger. Art prints are shipped unframed.

When will my order arrive?

Every piece is printed to order in the USA. Your estimated delivery date is shown right below the Add to Cart button and already accounts for production and shipping. Shipping is free on all US orders.

What if my order arrives damaged or misprinted?

Just email us at info@maisoncanvas.com within 60 days of delivery with a photo of the issue, and we'll send a free replacement or a refund. Because every piece is made to order, we can't accept returns for a change of mind or an incorrect size selection. Full details are in our Refund Policy.

Will the colors look the same as on my screen?

We work hard to show every piece as accurately as possible. Screens differ in brightness and color settings, so the printed colors can look very slightly different from what you see on your device.

How do I care for my artwork?

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid moisture, cleaning sprays and long periods of direct sunlight to keep the colors at their best.
